Norton Healthcare Inc. revealed its new $20.5 million location for CPA Lab Inc. at the former Hikes Point Kmart on Wednesday.

CPA Lab will consolidate services and relocate from a Jeffersontown lab to the new 46,000-square-foot facility at 2935 Breckinridge Lane in a push to enhance clinical laboratory resources, technology and services under the same roof.

“This is an exciting opportunity that has allowed us to expand diagnostic services for our community and reduce wait times for our customers, which includes providers and patients,” Russell Cox, president and CEO of Norton Healthcare, said in a news release. “This will decrease turnaround time and providers will receive lab results quicker, ultimately allowing patients to receive treatment faster.”

The Louisville-based nonprofit hospital system acquired CPA Lab in 2006. CPA Lab is a for-profit entity owned by Norton Enterprise Inc.

Norton Healthcare employs more than 20 board-certified subspecialized pathologists and employs about 270 people in total. They will support all Norton Healthcare facilities in Greater Louisville and a total of 800-plus medical partners throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana, according to the release.

In 2020, CPA Lab performed more than 2 million tests, including 197,000 Covid-19 tests. Collectively, seven Norton Healthcare laboratories perform about 6 million tests per year. In-house testing at Norton increased 100% in five years. Thus, the new lab is built with growth in mind, the release states.

Construction at the site kicked off in July. A portion of the funding for a genomics lab was received as a grant through the Norton Healthcare Foundation gifted by the Steven Vanover Foundation, the release states.

Norton Healthcare also developed a permanent drive-thru testing and diagnostics center that’s somewhat reminiscent of a multi-bay drive-up oil change center called Norton Healthcare Express Services near the lab.

Louisville Business First reported in February 2020 that CPA Lab would be the anchor tenant for the redevelopment of the former Kmart store. The site is now known as Breckenridge Center, located at the intersection of Breckenridge Lane and Taylorsville Road, and is being redeveloped by the Louisville-based real estate firm The McMahan Group.

Just a little to the North of the Norton Healthcare sites, local competitor Baptist Healthcare System Inc., McMahan Group and its affiliate Triple M Investments partnered to establish a planned five-story, 120,000-square-foot outpatient care center and primary care hub in place of the Breckenridge Inn, which is at the southwest corner of Breckenridge Lane and Interstate 264.

Norton Healthcare dominates the Louisville area health care market. State government data for 2018 shows Norton Healthcare accounted for about half of all hospital beds in the area, and controls about 98% of the pediatrics market.
